"It’s only natural you are going to have a few questions about where we’re headed. I guess you’re in this thing far enough now to have a few questions answered. Most everyone has head some kind of story or another about Onyx Hollow, and it doesn’t sound none too friendly in any of them.
Onyx Hollow is way out across the deep desert, nearly two months travel from the closest settlement. That means a long march across some of the roughest lands these realms have to offer. You’re going to be crossing through dead forests, over broken plains, through battered crags and across the sands of the deep desert to get to it. A large group can’t carry enough supplies to survive that long of a trip, which is why none of the clans have ever been able to send enough forces to hold Onyx Hollow for their own.
The Hollow itself is hidden inside a ring of mountains. It’s a green spot in the middle of all that desert. The mountains hold in the water and keep out the wind so you can live there, if you’re fool enough to do so, which is just what you’re being sent to do. So call yourself a fool but pack like you’ve got some sense. Oh sure there have been settlements out there, some have even lasted for a few years, but eventually they fall out of touch and when someone finally gets up the nerve to go check on them, they find empty buildings. Sometimes, if they’re really lucky, they find bones. If it’s any consolation, that means there will already be some buildings there for us to live in.
All this might make it sound like a bad choice for the clans to choose to use for having a meeting, but they figure it’s the only truly neutral ground left that has water. So we are going in there first to make sure that the road is clear. None of the clans trusted any one group to do the scouting so we have you. For whatever your reasons, you’re here to blaze this trail. If we do the job right, we might even live to see some good come out of this meeting for all of our clans.
On a bright note, that means if there is anything lying around of value or a good spot of land to set up shop, we’ve got first crack at it. I know that at least one group that tried to set up before were miners, I figure they didn’t come all that way on a hunch, there must be some wealth hidden away in that valley.
Mind your step once we set foot in Onyx Hollow. That valley is ancient and there is some strange magic at work there, some of the things that have been seen coming out of it are…unnatural. For that matter, just watch your step the whole way there, just to be safe. Let’s make this the first expedition that comes back home when its work is finished.”
